Established in 1984, the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Faculty of Construction and Environment, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is the only academic unit amongst tertiary institutions in Hong Kong offering a range of programs and research opportunities in the fields of Land Surveying & Geo-Informatics. Urban Informatics for Smart Cities is the strategic research area of the department, which has three directions: Spatial Big Data Modeling and Analytics, Smart Positioning and Navigation and Urban Sensing and Measurement. The key technologies of the department include land surveying, remote sensing, geographic information science and systems, satellite positioning, and underground utility imaging and diagnosis. We focus on acquisition, modeling, analysis, and management of spatially referenced data in a wide range of applications. The Department has close links with both international and local academic institutions and the professions. Links with local and overseas professional communities are maintained through our community service and consultancy activities, hence our courses and research are oriented towards the specific needs of Hong Kong, as well as the global market. In addition to highly respected research achievements, the Department is dedicated to offering a full range of geomatics programs. These include Higher Diplomas, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and up to PhD. These programs are accredited by both local and regional professional institutions, including HKIS, RICS, HKIE, and HKIES.

Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System, Peking University

The Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (IRSGIS), Peking University, is one of the earliest departments in China dedicating to research and teaching of spatial information science and technology. Aiming at the fundamental research, technology innovations, application developments, and innovation-driven education, IRSGIS has gradually developed into an important base for educating geospatial talents and fostering scientific research both domestically and internationally. Approved by the State Education Commission of China, the Institute of Remote Sensing Technology and Application was established in 1983, and renamed as the Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Peking University, in 1994. In 2001, IRSGIS was merged with the GIS major of the Department of City and Environment to admit undergraduate students majored in GIS, and became a part of the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. In the same year, Beijing Key Lab of Spatial Information Integration and 3S Application (Peking University) was established. In 2004, the Institute of Digital China was established by Peking University and managed by IRSGIS. Other units affiliated to IRSGIS include the Technical Training Department of National Remote Sensing Center (1981), the University Joint Research Center for Remote Sensing, Ministry of Education (1985), the Engineering Research Center of Earth Observation and Navigation, Ministry of Education (2007), and the Engineering Research Center for Fundamental Geographic Information Software and Application, National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation of China (2013). IRSGIS aims at educating students in spatial information science and technology to equip with specialty knowledge and creativity. Bachelor’s degree is Geographical Information Science. Master and Ph.D.’s degree is Cartography and GIS, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. There are 2 postdoctoral research center, Cartography and GIS (Geography) and Science and Technology of Surveying and Mapping. The career prospects for the graduates include research and teaching in colleges and universities, technology development and management in governments, research institutes, and IT companies in information and communication, urban and regional planning, land and resources, environment, transportation, traveling, aeronautics and astronautics, public security, military, ocean, water resources, and surveying and mapping.

State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University

The State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS), Wuhan University, was founded in 1989, and the first state key laboratory in the field of surveying and mapping in China. In evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, LIESMARS was consecutively ranked Excellent in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015, and was presented with the Golden Bull Award in 2004. The director of LIESMARS is Prof. Chen Ruizhi. The chairman of the academic committee of LIESMARS is Prof. Li Deren, who is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The laboratory follows the principle of a modest scale of development. According to the needs of disciplinary development, it expands research directions and continuously introduces high-level talents. There are 121 permanent personnel in LIESMARS, including 106 researchers. Among them, there are three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, 80 professors, 21 associate professors, 105 doctoral students, and 64 young and middle-aged technological personnel under the age of 45. The current research institutes are: Research Institute of Aerial and Space Photography; Research Institute of Remote Sensing Information Processing; Research Institute of Geospatial Information Systems and Services; Research Institute of 3S Integration and Network Communication; Research Institute of Navigation and Location-based Services. In accordance with the requirements of the "national team" in the relevant field, following the tenet of "opening, flowing, uniting, and competition" for national key laboratories, LIESMARS is united, hard-working, innovative, and enterprising. LIESMARS has become one of the centers for fundamental theoretical research and applied basic research in the field of mapping and remote sensing in China and the world with dynamic academic ideas, remarkable scientific research, a complete independent innovation system, and extensive academic exchanges. Great achievements have been made in scientific research, team building, personnel training, transformation of high technology achievements, and external academic exchanges.

Bridget Scanlon is a Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. Her degrees are in Geology with a focus on hydrogeology with a B.A. Mod. from Trinity College, Dublin (1980); M.Sc. from the Univ. of Alabama (1983), and Ph.D. from the Univ. of Kentucky (1985). She has worked at the Univ. of Texas since 1987. Her current research focuses on various aspects of water resources, including global assessments using satellites and modeling, management related to climate extremes, and water energy interdependence. She serves an Associate Editor for Water Resources Research and Environmental Research Letters and has authored or co-authored 170 publications. Dr. Scanlon is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Session 1

Dr. LIU Zhizhao currently is a Professor at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Before joining PolyU, he was working as a R&D specialist in the GNSS industry in Canada (2005-2009). He received the Ph.D. degree from The University of Calgary in 2004, MSc degree in Geodesy from Wuhan University in 1997 and BSc degree in Surveying Engineer from Jiangxi University of Science and Technology in 1994. His research interests include Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Theory and Applications, Space Geodesy, Engineering Surveying, Atmospheric Remote Sensing Using GNSS Technique, the Ionospheric Study and Modelling Based on GNSS Data.

Dr. FA Wenzhe is a Researcher in School of Earth and Space Science, Peking University, China. He received his Ph.D. degree from Fudan University in 2009. He was a visiting lecturer at Durham University in 2016. His research focuses on Lunar and planetary science, microwave remote sensing, electromagnetic scattering theory, parametric inversion. He is a member of American Geophysical Union(AGU) and IEEE. He has published more than 20 research papers in national and international journals such as Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets, Icarus, IEEE Geosciences and Remote Sensing Letters and Radio Science. He has co-published over 80 academic papers and has over 20 patents pending. He serves as a reviewer of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets, Icarus, Journal of Earth Science, Planetary, Space Science, etc.

Dr. SHI Wenzhong is currently the Director of Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute of PolyU, Director of PolyU-Shenzhen Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Futian), the Chair Professor in Geographic Science and Remote Sensing, the Director of Joint Research Laboratory on Spatial Information of PolyU and Wuhan University. He is the Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Fellow of Academy of Social Sciences (UK). He earned his doctoral degree from University of Osnabruck in Vechta, Germany in 1994. A Fellow of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, Professor Shi also serves as President of International Society for Urban Informatics and Editor-in-Chief of International Journal Urban Informatics. His research covers urban informatics for smart cities, geo-informatic science and remote sensing, artificial-intelligence-based object extraction and change detection from satellite imagery, intelligent analytics and quality control for spatial big data, and mobile mapping and 3-D modelling based on LiDAR and remote sensing imagery. He has published almost 300 research articles in journals indexed by Web of Science and 20 books. He is among the worldly top 2% cited researchers according to the standardized citation indicators published by Elsevier BV and scholar in Stanford University. He has 34 patents grants and 33 other patent applications filed.

Dr. DU Shihong is a Researcher of Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Peking University. He received a Ph.D. in Institute of Remote Sensing Applications Chinse Academy of Science in 2004. His research interests include Geographic information science, such as spatial knowledge representation and mining, intelligent understanding of spatial data, spatio-temporal statistics and environmental applications. He has published more than 100 academic papers, two monographs with first authorship and won one first prize of scientific and technological progress in surveying and mapping. He is a director of Committee of Spatial Statistics, an invited editorial board of International Journal of Image and Data Fusion, an editorial board of Geography and Geo-information Science. Also he is a reviewer of IJGIS、GeoInformatica、TGIS、CEUS、RSE、IEEE TGARS、ISPRS P&RS、IEEE JSTARS.

Session 2-2

Dr. LIU Yu is a Professor at School of Earth and Space Science, Peking University, China. He received his B.S. in 1994, M.S. in 1997 and Ph.D. in 2003, all from Peking University. He has long been committed to supporting research on geospatial models and analysis methods, and has been responsible for participating in more than ten national projects. In recent years, he has proposed the concept of social perception for geographic big data analysis methods, which has triggered a large response in academic circles. And he was awarded The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2016. He is an associate editor of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems and an editorial board of Journal of Spatial Information Sciences.

Dr. DONG Zhen is a Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University. Before joining Wuhan University, he received his doctor degree in 2018 and worked for 1 year in the Air Lab of Carnegie Mellon University. His research interest lies in the field of 3D Computer Vision, particularly including 3D reconstruction, scene understanding, point cloud processing as well as their applications in intelligent transportation system, digital twin cities, urban sustainable development and robotics. He is a Guest editor of INT J APPL EARTH OBS and a reviewer of CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ISPRS J, etc.

Dr. WU Bo is a professor of Fiona Cheung Professor in Spatial Science, a Director of Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory Director and Photogrammetry and Robotic Vision Laboratory, the Associate Head (Research) of Department of Land Surveying & Geo-Informatics, the Associate Director of Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his Ph.D. in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing in 2006 from State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University. He received his M.Sc. degree and B.Sc. degree in Highway Surveying, Changsha University of Science & Technology, China, 2003 and 2000. The Academic interests of Dr. Wu include Photogrammetry and Robotic Vision, Planetary Remote Sensing and Mapping and GIS and Applications. He serves as a reviewer for research proposals submitted to National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Singapore Land Transport Authority, Netherlands organization for Scientific Research, Austrian Science Fund (FWF), etc.

Dr. LUO Bin is a Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University. He received his Ph.D. at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications. Before coming to Wuhan University, he was a postdoctoral scholar in Institue Nationale Polytechnique Grenoble. Dr. Luo was the publication chair (2009-2013) of IEEE Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing: Evolution in Remote Sensing and the co-publication chair of IEEE MLSP in 2009. He is a reviewer of IEEE TIP, IEEE TGRS, IEEE JSTARS.

Session 3-2

Dr. ZHANG Xianfeng is a Professor of Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Peking University and the Associate Director of National Remote Sensing Center of China(Xinjiang). He received his PhD in Geography from University of Western Ontario in 2005 and Cartography and Geographic Information System from The Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth in 2000. His research interests include eological and environmental remote sensing, disaster remote sensing, public safety big data analysis, etc. He is a member of International Cartographic Association(ICA), sensor-driven mapping and IEEE.

Dr. WU Chen is a Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University. He received his Ph.D. at Wuhan University in 2015. His research interests include machine learning and pattern recognition, computer vision and artificial intelligence, multi-temporal remote sensing change detection and temporal analysis, high resolution/hyperspectral remote sensing image processing, etc. He is the author of more than 30 SCI papers and a recipient for various awards, fellowship and grant at the university, state and national levels.

Session 3-3

Dr. CHEN Jiale is a Professor of State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University. He received his Ph.D. degree from City University of Hong Kong in 2014. He worked as a senior scientist at DLR from 2017 to 2021. His research focuses on remote sensing of atmospheric composition, atmospheric chemistry model, radiative transfer model, remote sensing inversion algorithm, application of AI and machine learning in atmospheric remote sensing, etc. Dr. Chen is the chairman of OSA. He has published more than 50 SCI papers in recent years.

Dr. QIN Jianqi is a Researcher of Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Peking University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University Electrical Engineering in 2013 and MSc degree from Nanjing University in 2009. Prior to joining Peking University in 2019, he worked as a research scientist at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include remote sensing of the upper atmospheres of Earth and Mars, ultraviolet radiative transfer theory and gas discharge phenomena.

Session 4

Dr. WENG Qihao is currently a Chair Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and worked as the Director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Change and a Professor of Geography at Indiana State University, 2001-2021, and a Senior Fellow at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (2008-2009). He received his Ph.D. degree in geography from the University of Georgia in 1999. Dr. Weng is a foreign member of the academy of Europe (Academia Europaea), and a fellow of IEEE, AAAS, ASPRS and AAIA. And he is the lead of GEO Global Urban Observation and Information Initiative, 2012-2022, and an Editor-in-Chief of ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Additionally, he serves as the Series Editor of Taylor & Francis Series in Remote Sensing Applications, and Taylor & Francis Series in Imaging Science.

Dr. HE Wei is a Professor of Wuhan University. He received his Ph.D. degree from State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering from Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University in 2017. He worked as a researcher at RIKEN AIP in Japan from 2018 to 2021. His research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, hyperspectral remote sensing. He published 30 papers in SCI journals such as TPAMI, TCYB, TGRS, etc. He serves as a reviewer of IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TCYB, IEEE TGRS, ISPRS, IEEE TIP, CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, IJCAI, IGARSS, etc.

It aims to gather doctoral graduate students to discuss their research life, providing an exchange platform to discuss cutting-edge trends, hot issues, etc. We have designated four student representatives (YU Zidong & QING Yamin from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, XING Xiaoyue from Peking University, LI Zhuo Hong from Wuhan University) and two faculty advisors (ZHU Xiaolin from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and LIN Peirong from Peking University) to lead the discussions.
